Breathless part 2

Our next day in the Dominican Republic started with this breakfast for me. Nothing too exotic, but the passion fruit was new for me. After that first taste I made sure to get some every morning. If you've never tried it- it's a very interesting taste. Really tart and slimy, but also really yummy. The donut, on the other hand, was below average.

We took an excursion that day, which meant getting on a van for about a 45 minute ride away from the resort. This is the only photo I have of the little shopping area set up just outside of our resort. I actually wish we had visited there more than the one short time that we did. It was a more authentic experience than the shopping excursion we took the next day. Anyway- you can sort of see that this is just a little line of shops. The people knew what they were doing. They would first ask your name and/or where you were from. Then they'd give you a tour of everything in their shop, maybe offer you a free cheap little beaded bracelet "because I like you". They'd tell you that you would be their first sale of the day and that your sale would bless their shop. Then, if you did agree to buy something, you had to be prepared to deal with them. The only thing I bought was a small coconut shell coin purse for Clara. The guy asked for $15 first. I ended up paying him $6, which was still probably too much.
Anyway....our trip that day was called Reef Explorer (see the sign?) We started out with a boat ride out into the ocean. I don't know how far...we could still see the shore.
We landed at an 'island' of docks, which had 'pools' of semi-enclosed sea. I'm not certain I'm describing it very well. In any case it was a good place for my first snorkeling experience.
Here you can sort of get an idea of what it looked like, from the water....also my yellow water shoes.
For Christmas, Pete got me a waterproof case for our point-and-shoot camera. It worked really well, which was good because we didn't properly test it before jumping right in with it.
It's a true fact that nobody looks good in a snorkel mask.
They had these little jet-propulsion deals that we could try out. That was kind of fun. I have an especially hilarious video of Pete's first go at it.
We also did get a chance to go outside of the enclosed areas and did about a 45 minute snorkel-swim around the 'island'. The guy leading our group had some oatmeal, which attracted a bunch of fish as we swam around. It is my understanding, and not surprising, that the coral here was not in great shape. The water was a bit rough, and not crystal blue clear, since we were in the Atlantic and not the Caribbean, but we still enjoyed it and saw a nice variety of fishes.
Here you can see what the dock area was like. You can also tell what a lovely day it was for weather. Off on the right you can see the little cabana areas where you could get a short massage, which was included in the trip. We also had access to snacks and non-alcoholic drinks.
The reason for the enclosed areas were to provide a place for people to interact with stingrays and nurse sharks. Pete and I had, apparently, been snorkeling around in the shark 'pool' for quite a while before we finally asked the people "where do we go to see the sharks?" and were told that they were in that same pool. So we scooted ourselves off to the corner where the sharks were hanging out. They were quite docile and had no interest in being near us, but they did warn us that they still had their teeth. I kept my distance a bit.
Some of the stingrays were awfully big. They creeped me out a bit too. But it was very cool to watch them swim and settle themselves back into the sand.
This sign cracked me up. It says "This could be you!" One of the first things we were encouraged to do was to try to hold a stingray. You can probably imagine just how good Pete and I were at that activity. The guys kept saying "My friend! Lady! Put your hands like this!" But we were jumpy and awkward and worried about hurting the poor stingray. They just really wanted to get our picture so they could sell it to us. And they did manage to get a decent one that somehow masks the fact that we were so goofy about the whole thing. I'll have to scan it to share in another post.
Here we are on the way back to shore.
Pete, with a big, rusty anchor.
We both napped on the ride back to the resort. After showering, I made a phone call to the kids to check in and tell them that we weren't eaten by a shark. Actually- when I first told them that Dad and I spent the morning swimming with stingrays and sharks, Clara's first question was "did they bite you?" Carrie commented about the headboard decoration...Carrie- it was just a design printed on some sort of acrylic piece. But all of the walls and hallways had a similar geometric and origami-style design. I didn't get any specific photos of them, but in my final post I'll share another photo of our room and you can see the accompanying wall decor there.
That night we went to dinner at the Italian restaurant. Again, we had a drink at the "Wink" bar while we waited. There was a cheesy singer who seemed to have a small repertoire- as we heard her do a few of the same songs on consecutive nights.
Are you tired, yet, of photos like this? There will probably be a few more before I'm finished sharing about our trip... But I guess that's it for now. I miss how nice my hair was in the Dominican. And my suntan is already starting to fade.... I guess that means it's time to go back to work.

Punta Cana

Here are some pictures from our first couple nights of our trip. Pete and I got up early on Saturday morning (the 28th) and flew to Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. We had decided to stay at an all-inclusive resort, since the main focus of our vacation was meant to be relaxation. Our travel agent did a nice job of finding us a place with a direct flight and decent prices, due to the fact that it's a brand new resort. She told them we were celebrating our 10th anniversary, so they gave us an upgrade to a room with an ocean view, which was so great. Here's the view from our deck...
And the zoomed-in view of the beach.
After spending a bit of time trying to figure out what had happened to Pete's iPhone (we never did find it) we finally just called home from the room phone. Then we went down for a drink in the main lobby bar.
Here's our room with the Happy Anniversary banner.
That first night it started raining right as the evening's show was about to begin. We all went to the indoor theater to watch the belly dance show. It was corny, but fun for a bit. We didn't stay too long.
On the way back to our room Pete took my suggestion to try out the newly-installed swing at this pool bar. We know it was newly installed because they were in the process of putting it up when we were on our way to dinner.
Our first full day at the resort we pretty much took it easy and hung out on the beach. We left our watches in the room, since we had no schedule or expectation on our time whatsoever. We read, played in the water, drank some drinks, napped and watched the people.
I did not mean for this to be a feet picture, it just turned out that way. We had a nice spot under one of these palm umbrellas.
Here's a nice shot of our empty Mai Tai glasses. This is actually one of my favorite moments of the entire trip. Pete was reading aloud to me an interesting part from his book. The weather was gorgeous and we were just enjoying life.
After a while we went and had some lunch at this spot right by the beach. There were several restaurants to choose from. This was one of our favorites, due to its location.
Then we went back to the beach. We played in the waves for a while and read some more. After a while it started to drizzle a bit and then this lovely rainbow came out.
When it decided to rain a little more heavily we went back to the room and used the hot tub on the balcony. Or, rather, I spent time there with my book while Pete took a nap in the room.
Then we dressed up a bit and went down for dinner. We put our names in at the French restaurant and then waited in the main bar for a bit. It was fun to talk to other people and find out where they were from. I think that night we spoke with a couple from Ohio, Poland and one guy from Florida.
After a nice, long dinner we went back to the outdoor show area. There were big round couch-like seats where we were able to curl up. The show that night was a singer named Chris Blizzard (you haven't heard of him? He won a singing show on BET in 2009!) and then there was karaoke.
I convinced Pete to get up and do a song, which was another favorite part of the trip. He sang Brown Eyed Girl and was definitely one of the best singers of the evening, though the others were fun as well. No, I'm not biased and Yes, I do have video.
We ended that night with a can of el Presidente, the country's main beer.
When we got back to our room that night they had put rose petals and Hershey's kisses on our bed. Such romance. We kept our air conditioning off and our patio door open every night to listen to the sounds of the ocean. It made for very nice sleeping!

Stinky Dipe

Trying out the Blogger mobile app.
This is where Fritz likes to go when he knows I want to change his diaper.

Winter Sing and Zoo Lights

Last week the Christmas spirit really amped up around here with Henry and Clara's winter sings at school. Clara's was first. Here she is with her pals, getting ready to sing her heart out on four adorable songs. We're fortunate that at Meadowbrook they do the sings in the big gym, so grandparents are able to come (unlike at my school, where we use the lovely auditorium, but only 2 family members can attend). Grandma and Bampa are always enthusiastic audience members. The rest of you can come enjoy the video.
Henry's sing was the next morning. That's one of his buddies giving him bunny ears behind him. This was not during the sing, but rather the 'Kodak moment' photo opportunity beforehand. Henry had a speaking part this year. We were quite proud.
We were supposed to have gone to Iowa City this past weekend to celebrate with everyone there, but the weather looked daunting for making the drive, so we all (Will's family and ours) decided to postpone Christmas until MLK weekend. It's made for a bit more of a relaxing weekend. We were able to go to Brookfield last night to see the ZooLights. My favorite part was the polar bear sleigh.
Rob would have been excited to see this giant talking tree.
 Clara enjoyed the giant ornaments.
After the zoo we pushed our tired kids a bit and went to Hackney's for dinner. Hackney's never disappoints, with it's festive decorations and entertainment. I like this picture because Frederick is watching the carolers walk by, but also because I love his hat hair. The giant pitcher of Green River behind him is sort of a fun bonus as well.
Henry was not actually this pouty about the carolers. He just didn't want his picture taken.
There was also a balloon guy. The kids got a wreath and a candy cane. He was running low on white and red, so they got more colorful combinations. Fritz wanted to head to the foosball table instead of staying put for the photo.
Today the kids have a lunch date with Grandma and Bampa. Pete and I will be doing some last minute tidying and other preparations. There are probably more Christmas movies and popcorn and treats in our future tonight. Pete and I may or may not be planning to have a pre-Christmas Eve martini. Oh, and, in keeping with our typical timeline...we have to have one major household appliance with issues at Christmastime. This year it appears to be the furnace, which stopped blowing for a portion of the night last night. So, we'll be dealing with that and Pete's check engine light as well. (Not Pete's check engine light...the light of his car.)

Thanksgiving on...

Here's the adorable tiny-hand turkey that Frederick 'made' for us for Thanksgiving.
And here's the real live turkey that was in the Starbucks parking lot on the last day of work before we left town for Thanksgiving...
And here's Clara, Anders and Henry dressed up for Thanksgiving morning.
We were up in Minnesota for Thanksgiving this year. We stayed with Will and Sandy, but had dinner at Aunt Paula's newish house (they've been in about a year now) and Grandpa and Nana came up to eat turkey as well.
Here's Aunt Paula loving on Anders...
The kids had a great time with their cousin Anders, too. Here they are, performing the classic black-olive-on-the-finger trick.
They didn't totally fill up on olives. Here they are getting ready for the big meal.
Aunt Paula took extra care to make sure we could all sit down together at one big table. It was so nice to be together!
Clara had made some table decorations.

After dinner, of course, there was artwork to make.

Clara got to wear one of Grandpa Fritz's old shirts to protect her clothes.

Frederick got in on the action too.

One of the activities the next day was to make sugar cookies with Aunt Sandy. She was happy to allow the kids to choose a wide and crazy variety of colors. The cookies turned out adorable and delicious. We made foxes, reindeer, hedgehogs, footballs, stars, bears and squirrels.
Frederick tried to watch the football game with Uncle Will, but he was a little yelly at times.

Before going home we had a yummy cheeseburger meal at a place called Burger Jones.

Clara ordered the Little Elvis, which was peanut butter, banana and Nutella. Ate the whole thing up!

When we got back from Minnesota it was right back to school and work for all of us. We decided we didn't have the luxury of time to go cut our own tree down this year, so we went to a local garden center here, on a misty evening, and picked out a nice one.
Frederick approved of our choice. I don't actually think this was it...
Completely unrelated...Clara has been doing a ton of writing lately. Here's a note she left for the cleaners. "I'm a girl, Clara. May you please clean the ceiling right next to the trash can." I loved it so much.
Here's another one she left for St. Nick. " I love you St. Nicholas. You are so nice to me. Thank you for that. Could you give me a note back. Clara. And Frederick." I especially love "dif" for "give." It's so Clara.
Here are the kids on St. Nick's morning, checking out their new ornaments. We also had a special Swedish coffee cake made from Grandma Opal's recipe.

Here's an outtake from our Christmas card photo shoot.
Did I mention that Mom and Zeke were here with us for a bit?
Frederick especially loves all of the ornaments that look like his favorite thing in the world...."ball!"
