Hi Airplane!

Pete and Clara hung out while Henry was in sports class and I tried to sleep off a nasty headache yesterday evening.

Sunday and Today

Sunday we had the drive from hell on the way home from Minneapolis. Okay, well, it could have been worse if we had had weather or sick kids, but the traffic sucked. Notice the taillights.
We did go for the nuclear option and let the kids watch a movie after their nap. We let them watch another one after dinner, because yes- we were still in the car after dinner. Here's how they looked when we would look back. Henry was in the Ponyo zone and Clara wanted more snacks.
Flash forward to today. Henry had grandparent day at school. I know his out-of-town grandparents will be jealous, but we promise to find some other special things for them as well. Bampa and Grandma Mary got the chance to come in and hang out. From what I hear there were special treats (Cookies! Halloween-shaped pretzels!) and games. There were also grandparents taking movies of each other with their iphones, which is so cute.
Here's a picture Grandma took of Henry by his recent addition to a "we can read" bulletin board.
Hooray for Grandparents!!

Still Recovering

By all rights I should be asleep, considering we were among the first to arrive at Sarah's wedding, and the last to leave. Here are Henry and Clara with Felix and Oliver, entertaining themselves in the hour before the ceremony.
We had first choice of seats, but chose to sit where we might take a quick exit if necessary. Fortunately, it wasn't necessary.
And Anders sat by us.
Here are the kids having some fun during cocktail hour. Somehow I missed any opportunities to get photos of me with my sisters-in-law or with my brothers.
Aunt Paula brought some drawing supplies around for all of the children during the dinner.
Henry and Clara each made some pictures for the bride and groom.
We all enjoyed Paula's punny slide show.
Clara was the party girl on the dance floor.
She was also the last one to leave the dance floor at the end of the night. We watched almost everyone else drive away before taking our tired children home. But don't let Clara fool you...this wasn't her trying to sleep on the dance floor, it was just one of her moves.
Stay tuned for a look at the book Henry wrote during the reception. I think it may become a best seller.
In case I forgot to say it before...Congratulations to Sarah and Josh!!

Hokey Pokey

As soon as we got in the car after the wedding tonight Clara said "I want to hear the Hokey Pokey!" Pete was the d.j. and we had been promising the kids all along that we would do the Hokey Pokey, but then forgot to play it!!
So, guess what the four of us did in the hotel room when we got back? Did I mention it was already eleven o'clock?
That's what it's all about!

Not sure...

Not sure where the camera is. Or the cord. But the kids are sleeping. They declared the hotel's hide-a-bed to be "the coolest thing" they'd ever seen and "totally awesome!!!!" Do Pete and I look almost 19 again in this picture? Maybe just him.

Where the pieces?

Tomorrow is Peace Day, officially sanctioned by the UN and whatnot. I was planning some things to do with my students tomorrow and I pulled out the Peace Book tonight. Henry and Clara wanted to hear it as well.So the book goes something like "Peace is sharing. Peace is keeping the water clean for the fish. Peace is everyone having shoes. Peace is being kind to animals..." and so forth. So we got close to the end and all of a sudden Clara says to me "Where the pieces?"

Norbert

We got together to celebrate Norbert's first birthday a little early tonight. He turns one next Sunday! Check this little dude out! He's such a great personality.
I made an extra cake to take over to celebrate Helena's birthday, belatedly, also. I'd been wanting to try this cake for a long time. It's the one from the front cover of my favorite baking cook book.
Mine didn't turn out quite as pretty as hers, but it looked okay, and it tasted delicious!

Busy Fun

We've been doing lots of fun stuff here these last couple of days. Here's a picture from Thursday when Anna and Sebby came over to play for a bit. Pete has decided to start buying toilet paper online, and we had just gotten our first shipment, so we used the t.p. and the box and made a little fortress wonderland.
Yesterday was beautiful outside. I didn't want to let the kids get in the sandbox because they had to stay nice and clean for our dinner out (see yesterday's post). So we played out front and did some fancy chalkwork. Don't miss Henry's warning at the bottom of the driveway here.
He's kind of into dinosaurs these days.
Clara decided to chalk up the tree a bit.
Henry's being attacked by a t-rex.
Clara also thought she'd experiment with chalk-on-hand.
And Henry had chalk-on-butt.
They like to stand in this tree.
Later we got dressed up a bit for dinner, but Clara wouldn't let me take a picture.

Today we tried to have a bit of a tailgate, even though the football game is just starting now at 9:35 PM!
It was fun to have our friends over and eat junk food.
Norbert wasn't sure why he didn't get cake.
Here are two very little Hawkeye fans trying their best to stay up late. This was before I put Clara to bed and then discovered the mess of burrs in her ponytail. Oy vey. Fortunately we were able to brush them out without having to sacrifice her hair or pull too terribly much.
Go Hawks!
