Iowa City Weekend

We had a weekend full of emotions in Iowa City. Friday night we met up with everyone at the Sanctuary for a little dinner. Here's Clara showing off her new purse. We (I) couldn't resist buying the matching one for Eleanor as well. The kids also got some Hawkeye necklaces from a vendor down the street from the restaurant.
The next morning Henry and I went to the football game. Uncle Rob predicted that there would be little, if any, rain. It started as soon as Pete dropped us off and barely ever let up. I was joined for most of the first half by this friendly praying mantis. He sat on my head. I think he was too wet to fly anywhere. And where would he go? Henry and I decided to call him Marvin, after our favorite #7.
I couldn't believe what a sport Henry was. He didn't complain once about the rain- even though I gave him every opportunity to cut out early. When we finally did go during the 3rd quarter I think we snuck out just before they called a rain delay due to lightning. But look at this face!!
We had to hide out down below for a while once we left, because it was blowing and pouring pretty hard. Eventually we started walking and I was hoping we'd find a Cambus shuttle to get downtown. We didn't. But still, Henry didn't complain the entire walk to Java House. It may have helped that I promised him a hot chocolate when we got there. Pete showed up with several towels, per request. It was very nice to see him. We were wet all the way through. Look at my head.
Sunday was a much sunnier day, if a little cool. Mom and I attended a memorial service for the son of her neighbor, someone I had been friends with in junior high and high school. It was an emotional occasion, but I was glad to have been there. (Frankly though, I would like the next memorial service I have to attend to be for someone significantly older than me.)
Later Sunday evening we went to the Hancher lawn to attend a farewell performance for the flood-damaged Hancher building. Again, it was a happy and sad event. The performers were Hubbard Street Dance, and they were fabulous. The kids really enjoyed it. There were even surprise fireworks accompanied by a song from Les Miserables, that somehow managed to feel just the right mix of corny and poignant.
Here's a picture of the stage before it got dark out. Later we moved to have a better view. Obviously, Hancher has a lot of significance to Pete and I separately and together. We will be very sad when they start to tear it down.
The other sad note to our weekend was the passing of Oscar, Rob and Carrie's sweet dog. He had been ill for about a month, so it wasn't unexpected, but he was such a good boy. We will all miss him very much. As the world works, though, everything is life and death and life and death and life again. We loved having some time to hold little Penny and we got to spend some time with Amber and Jeff and their two little dears as well. We also are celebrating the birthdays this week of Anders (3!) and Vivian (1!) and Grandma Mary.

Busy Fun

We've been doing lots of fun stuff here these last couple of days. Here's a picture from Thursday when Anna and Sebby came over to play for a bit. Pete has decided to start buying toilet paper online, and we had just gotten our first shipment, so we used the t.p. and the box and made a little fortress wonderland.
Yesterday was beautiful outside. I didn't want to let the kids get in the sandbox because they had to stay nice and clean for our dinner out (see yesterday's post). So we played out front and did some fancy chalkwork. Don't miss Henry's warning at the bottom of the driveway here.
He's kind of into dinosaurs these days.
Clara decided to chalk up the tree a bit.
Henry's being attacked by a t-rex.
Clara also thought she'd experiment with chalk-on-hand.
And Henry had chalk-on-butt.
They like to stand in this tree.
Later we got dressed up a bit for dinner, but Clara wouldn't let me take a picture.

Today we tried to have a bit of a tailgate, even though the football game is just starting now at 9:35 PM!
It was fun to have our friends over and eat junk food.
Norbert wasn't sure why he didn't get cake.
Here are two very little Hawkeye fans trying their best to stay up late. This was before I put Clara to bed and then discovered the mess of burrs in her ponytail. Oy vey. Fortunately we were able to brush them out without having to sacrifice her hair or pull too terribly much.
Go Hawks!

In other news...tomorrow's post will probably be about a new baby cousin for Henry and Clara!!!

Hawks and Birthday

First Hawks game of the season. I went with Sandy, her sister Sarah, and Carrie. We had a great time and the Hawks won.
It was also the 2nd birthday of my sweet nephew Anders. Here he is with Clara and Henry.
Anders had a fun birthday party at City Park. We had some pizza and rode the rides. Hooray!
These pictures are all from Pete's camera. I'll post some more when I load mine.

Halloween

First of all...Go Hawks!!! It was a spooky game there for a while!
Here's Henry at breakfast. I was going to make pumpkin pancakes, but didn't get any pumpkin, so we did orange sprinkles and chocolate chips instead. The bat was a project at the library.
Last night, when Pete went to get our Thai take-out, Henry and I quickly decorated Pete's pumpkin. Here's the finished product.
Here we are, about to start our trick-or-treating.
It was cool and windy, but sunny!
Clara was unsure about the whole thing.
After trick-or-treats there was much chaos at our house. Here are the kids eating a little dinner.
Here are the cakes that I couldn't resist...as if we needed more sugar. (Also- please note the completely unopened bag of Milky Way in the background! I can't believe we have extra- and I can't believe it's Milky Way instead of something better.)
Here are the poor little girls that just about got trampled by the big boys running crazy around the house. They held their own pretty well.
Now the kids are sleeping. Maybe they'll let us sleep in for that extra hour in the morning....
