Henry IS the amateur gardener...

Henry had much work to do in the yard today. I planted a few "johnny-jump-ups" in my front planters and cleared out some old garbage from the flower beds, but Henry got some serious work done. Here he is working with the spray bottle, saying "Hi!" to Bartelby the garden gnome (thanks Sue and Dave!), supervising Dad's raking and filling the watering can...not necessarily in that order.

Now, a request for some help. Here are two of the lovely tulips that have recently surfaced. I'm smitten with this rosy-pink one. Does anyone have an idea of what it might be called? Also, it's been recommended to me that I could separate these hostas and day-lilies. Specifically that the day-lilies will bloom better if not so crowded. Any idea on how to do this? I've never done such a thing. Actually, they also mentioned that I might find more tulip bulbs if I dig around where these have popped up, that maybe they've been crowded out. Does that make sense to anyone? Is there a time that's best to do such a thing? And, to the literary-minded, should I stop saying "such a thing"?

i know for a fact that joyce is dividing hostas this spring, so i think she'll be able to give you some instruction on that front.
we planted some summer bulbs (lilies, jack in the pulpit) yesterday and i'm excited for blooms in a few months. my garden almanac suggests digging and dividing daylilies around july when they've finished blooming. our blog will have gardening pics soon...
i call our tulips "the red ones," "the red and yellow ones" and "the purple-ish ones," so i'm no help with the identification dilemma.

perhaps larry y can help you with the tulips. he's moved anne's tulips to their entire yard... i'm not much help b/c in memphis our tulips come up early and our hostas after that. however, last year i did divide the hostas in spring. jeri said you can divide them anytime, i believe. also. while in chitown this weekend i realized memphis is not the place for tulips. they're simply not fit for the heat. they need the chilly evenings. must find some better options for the deep south. -ac
